Rainier View Park – Covered Court

The exciting new Rainier View Park project in Sumner is set to transform the park into a more inclusive and enjoyable space for the community. This project encompasses a range of enhancements, starting with improvements to the ADA parking stalls and the installation of accessible ADA curb ramps and sidewalks, ensuring that everyone can easily access the park. Additionally, a brand-new bathroom facility equipped with water, sewer, and power will be constructed, adding much-needed convenience for park-goers.

For sports enthusiasts, the project includes replacing portions of and adding new pavement around the existing basketball court, renovating the sport courts with a covered roof designed to create the ultimate all-weather sports and recreation space. The court will also be painted to accommodate basketball, volleyball and pickleball courts.

The City has received grant funding from the Recreation Conservation Office (RCO) and Washington State's Local Community Project Program (LCP) to help fund this project.

  • Will the hoops be updated with nicer ones like glass backboards and breakaway rims? Old design park hoops with metal backboards and double rims are awful to play on.

Middlestick asked about 2 months ago

There will be six new basketball hoops installed with the new covered court. The backboards will be the outdoor style made out of aluminum. The rims will be the regular style instead of double rims.

  • When the park and covered picnic area be available, thanks

    Adrienne asked 2 months ago

We are unable to give an exact date at this time, but we are looking at opening the new covered court and covered picnic area this fall. The covered picnic area needs to stay closed while the new covered court is being built due to the proximity of the picnic area to construction activities.

The new playground area should be open in the next week or two depending on the weather.

  • When will the park be completed? I see that it says Summer/Fall 2024, but is there an exact date or estimate of what month?

    Ava asked 3 months ago

The park's new playground equipment will be finished by February 16th. The construction of the covered court will be starting this February. At this stage of the project it is too early give a more exact date as to when the project will be completed other than fall of 2024.

  • Will anything be done to improve the drainage around the blacktop trail at Rainier View Park? Whenever it rains, the pathways are un-walkable due to water across them in several places. Thanks for your response.

    Leah asked 3 months ago

There will not be drainage improvements around the blacktop trail as part of the covered court project. We will pass on the information to the City's Parks Department for investigation. Thank you for bringing the drainage issue to our attention.

  • We are excited to see an enhancement to the playground space for younger kids. It does look a lot like the Edgewood park or Loyalty Park. The identifying feature of this park and the thing that drew us to it was the rock wall. In fact both my 5 and 8 year old broke down in tears when they saw it torn down. Can a 3 D rock wall such as the last one be included?

    Amy asked 5 months ago

Thank you for your question. Please see the below rendering which shows a rock climbing wall next to the slide on the left side of the photo.

This project page is for the new covered basketball court project at Rainier View Park. The playground equipment replacement is a different project which is handled by a different project manager. For further questions regarding the playground equipment, please contact Derek Barry at derekb@sumnerwa.gov or (253) 299-5714.

  • Will you be replacing the kids play sets? We go to this park multiple times a week with our Children and now cannot. Thanksz

    Corey asked 6 months ago

Yes, the City is currently under construction with replacing the park's playground equipment. The playground equipment replacement is a separate project from the covered court project. Attached are some photos of what the new playground will look like.

  • Will there be fun equipped for the younger kids? Swings, slides etc? The younger children use this park more than the ball area.

    Dds asked 6 months ago
